Julia Dubenko
“Glass is both memory and transformation—a material that resists, then yields. I begin with a form, a hue, or a pattern—and let the glass guide the rest.”
For Julia Dubenko, working with glass is a quiet kind of magic. Since discovering lampworking in 2012, she has been captivated by the fluidity of molten glass—how it responds to heat, breath, and motion. In her hands, it becomes luminous and alive, full of bubbles, light, and the memory of fire.
Originally trained in economics, Julia shifted paths after moving to Moscow, where she encountered flame-worked glass and quickly immersed herself in its practice. In 2014, she travelled to Murano to study blown bead techniques with Davide Penso. A 2018 masterclass with Igor Balbi on traditional Venetian goblets deepened her understanding of form, balance, and discipline—skills that now inform her abstract, sculptural approach.
Her body of work spans jewellery, vases, panels, and interior objects—often exploring the transformative nature of glass and the tension between fragility and structure.
Julia’s pieces have been exhibited across Russia and Europe, including shows in Moscow, France, and Germany. In 2024, her vase New Source, made from recycled bottle glass, won the “Author’s Items” category at the IV Biennial Invented and Made in Russia.
She continues to work from her Moscow studio, exploring new techniques—including fused and sculptural processes—and integrating sustainable practices into her work. Her most meaningful moments remain rooted in the act of glassmaking itself.
